Roof work by McCluskey Roofing
Pointing is not the same as secure bedding
Ridge tiles close the meeting line between roof slopes. On a mortar-bedded arrangement, the bedding and visible joints need considering together. If only the exposed pointing has deteriorated and the underlying arrangement is sound, the repair discussion differs from one involving loose tiles or failed bedding. Adding fresh mortar to the surface cannot establish whether the tile is properly supported and restrained beneath it.
Loose sections, cracked joints and fragments falling into gutters should prompt an assessment, not a homeowner’s attempt to test the ridge. The height and uncertain tile security make that unsafe. Ask what has been checked and whether the recommendation is based on a close inspection. Clear terminology helps distinguish a limited joint repair from work that requires lifting and resetting the ridge covering.
How the extent of mortar failure changes the work
A small area of deterioration is not directly comparable with failing joints along a full ridge line. Preparation and removal of unsuitable mortar are part of the scope, and the condition of each ridge tile matters. Pieces may be cracked or damaged even when the original concern was the mortar. The planned repair should identify the affected sections and explain how surrounding sound areas will be treated.
Previous surface repairs can conceal the condition beneath them. If joints have repeatedly reopened, the reason should be investigated rather than simply repeating the same intervention. Movement, bedding defects and tile security require consideration. A quotation should explain what will be removed and renewed, not merely describe applying mortar wherever gaps are visible from the ground.

Where tiles need lifting, the work includes handling the existing pieces, preparing the support and refitting or replacing suitable units. Replacement matching depends on profile and compatibility with the roof, not only appearance. The cost of ridge tiles as material is therefore only one element of that job. Ask whether the proposal assumes reuse and how unsuitable pieces discovered during work will be addressed.
The junction with the main roof covering also needs attention. Disturbed tiles or slates should be correctly refitted, and any ventilation arrangements must remain appropriate for the construction. A repair at the ridge should not obstruct an existing moisture strategy. If the roof build-up is being changed, that should be discussed as part of the overall roof specification rather than as an incidental mortar task.
Dry ridge as a separate option
A dry ridge arrangement uses mechanical components rather than relying on exposed mortar joints in the same way. It must suit the roof, ridge tiles and installation requirements. Dry ridge cost relates to that complete arrangement, including preparation and any changes needed to the existing construction. It is not meaningful to compare the material alone with a quotation for limited mortar repointing.
Converting an existing ridge needs an assessment of compatibility and the intended ventilation detail. Ask what components are proposed, how the ridge tiles are restrained and how the transition at ends or adjoining features is handled. The dry ridge and verge page explains that option in more depth. The appropriate choice should follow roof condition and specification rather than assuming one method universally suits all properties.
Access, adjacent features and a useful quotation
Ridges vary in height, length and accessibility. Chimneys, hips, adjoining roofs and narrow site access can change the working arrangement. Safe access and protection beneath the ridge are part of the repair plan, even when a defect appears small. Describe nearby extensions and shared boundaries in your enquiry. A photograph of the roof as a whole is often more useful than a tightly cropped view of one crack.
Compare quotes by the sections included, the distinction between pointing and rebedding, tile replacement allowances and the proposed access. Ask whether disposal and refitting disturbed coverings are addressed. If alternatives are offered, make sure they cover the same outcome. A clear scope explains what will secure and weather the ridge, whereas a general ridge tile repointing cost estimate cannot confirm the condition of the roof.
Need it sorted? Book ridge and verge repairs
If mortar is failing at the ridge, ask McCluskey Roofing to discuss the distinction between pointing, rebedding and a suitable mechanical arrangement. Include your postcode, the roof shape and any loose fragments noticed from below. A free quote should identify the ridge sections being addressed and the intended repair, rather than use repointing as an undefined description of all possible work.
