Tyneside flats and terraces
Areas such as Bensham, Saltwell and parts of Low Fell have long rows of terraces and Tyneside flats, where an upstairs and downstairs flat share one roof. These often have slate roofs, shared chimney stacks and rear offshoots with flat or lean-to roofs. Repairs here often involve slipped slates, worn ridge mortar, leadwork at the stack and tired flat roofs on the back.
Because two households share the roof, it helps to talk to the other owner early so access and costs can be agreed.
Low Fell and Whickham
Low Fell has a mix of Victorian and Edwardian houses with bay windows and larger slate roofs, along with inter-war semis. Bay roofs, dormers and roof valleys all need regular attention.
Whickham, on higher ground to the west, has older village properties alongside large estates of semis and detached houses with concrete tile roofs. Ridge and verge repairs and full re-roofs are typical on those.
Felling and Birtley
Felling has terraces, council-built homes and newer estates. Many have concrete tiled roofs that are now reaching the age where slipped tiles, crumbling mortar and failing felt are common.
Birtley, at the southern edge of the borough, has a similar mix of older terraces and post-war housing, with garages and extensions carrying flat roofs that often need re-covering.
Ryton and the west
Ryton and nearby villages have stone-built cottages and older houses alongside modern estates. Older roofs here may have heavier slates, stone chimneys and lime mortar, which need care when repairing.
Exposure and weather
Gateshead stretches from the riverside up to exposed higher ground. Roofs on the hills catch more wind and driving rain, which is hard on ridge tiles, verges and chimney pointing.
Services we provide in Gateshead
We carry out roof repairs, slate and tile roof replacements, flat roofing in EPDM and other coverings, and chimney repairs and repointing.
Roof repairs in Gateshead
Common repairs include slipped slates or tiles, ridge and verge repairs, lead flashing around chimneys and leaks on flat roof offshoots. We trace the cause rather than just patching the damp patch.
Gateshead town centre and Bensham
Close to the town centre, streets of older terraces climb the bank above the river. Many have been converted or modernised inside but still have original roof timbers and slate coverings. Valleys between the main roof and rear offshoots are a common source of leaks here.
Post-war estates
Gateshead has large post-war estates with concrete tile roofs, many now several decades old. As the original felt underlay and battens age, tiles slip and leaks appear. Some of these roofs are ready for a full replacement with breathable membrane and new battens.
Flat roofs south of the river
Garages, porches, dormers and kitchen extensions across Gateshead often have felt flat roofs. EPDM is a common choice when they are re-covered, with careful detailing at walls and edges.
Chimneys across the borough
Older Gateshead houses often have large brick stacks shared between neighbours. Weathered pointing, cracked flaunching and lifted flashing are typical faults, and they are best repaired together while access is in place.
