Roof work by McCluskey Roofing
Covering Durham from Wallsend
We are McCluskey Roofing North East Ltd, a roofing company based in Wallsend. Durham is further from our yard than the North Tyneside streets we work in most weeks, so visits there are planned rather than squeezed in between other jobs. When you get in touch, we arrange a time that suits you and the work we already have booked, and we tell you plainly when that is likely to be.
The office line, 0191 468 2893, and the mobile, 07770 714430, are both answered Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm. A full postcode, a short description of the problem and, if you have them, a couple of photos taken safely from the ground help us judge whether a survey is the right next step and what to bring along.
The kind of houses we see around Durham
Durham and the villages around it have a wide spread of housing. There are stone-built terraces close to the older parts of the city, long brick terraces in former pit villages, post-war semis with hipped tiled roofs, and newer estates with concrete tiles and a lot of extensions and garages added over the years.
Each of those roofs ages in its own way. A terrace might share a chimney stack and a lead-lined valley with next door. A post-war semi often has a concrete tile roof that has simply reached the end of its useful life. Newer homes tend to throw up questions about flat roofs over kitchens and garages rather than the main slopes. We look at your house on its own terms rather than assuming every roof on the street is the same.
Replacing roofs on older terraces
On an older terrace, a re-roof is usually about more than the slates or tiles. Battens may be tired, the felt underlay may have perished or never been fitted, and the joints where your roof meets the neighbour need careful thought so that both houses stay watertight. We explain how we deal with the party line before work starts, so you can let your neighbour know what to expect.
Where slates are still in good condition, it is sometimes worth reusing a proportion of them alongside matching new material. Where they are not, we talk you through suitable slate or tile options and how they will look against the rest of the row. You can read more about how a full strip and re-roof runs on our roof replacements page.
Flat and EPDM roofs on extensions and garages
Kitchen extensions, rear offshoots and garages around Durham often have felt roofs that have split, blistered or started to hold water. Once the boards underneath have gone soft, patching the surface rarely lasts. Replacing the covering with an EPDM rubber membrane over a sound deck is often the more sensible choice.
EPDM is laid as a single sheet where the size allows, with trims, upstands and outlets formed to suit the roof. It suits garages and extensions alike, and we check falls and drainage at the same time so that water leaves the roof rather than sitting on it.
Conservatory roof conversions
A polycarbonate or glass conservatory roof can make the room too hot in summer and too cold for much of the year. Swapping it for a lightweight, insulated tiled roof can turn it into a space you actually use. Before quoting, we check the frame, the base and the wall junction to make sure the conversion is right for your conservatory.
If you are weighing this up for a Durham property, our smart conservatory roofs page explains what is involved and the questions worth asking.
How a job runs
It starts with a free quote. We visit, look at the roof from the ground and, where it is safe, from closer up, then put in writing what we propose to do and why. If there is anything we cannot judge until the old covering is off, we tell you that up front.
Once you are happy, we agree a start date and talk through access, scaffolding, parking for deliveries and where waste will go. On the job we keep you informed if anything changes, and when the work is done we clear up and walk you through what has been completed.
Nearby areas we cover
From Durham, we also work in places such as Chester-le-Street, Brandon, Bowburn, Sherburn, Pity Me, Framwellgate Moor, Langley Moor, Ushaw Moor, Belmont and Newton Hall. If your village is not listed, call with your postcode and we will tell you straight away whether it is within reach.
