Roof work by McCluskey Roofing
Understand what the GRP proposal contains
A fibreglass roof needs a suitable substrate and a correctly formed waterproof build-up. Reinforcement, resin and finishing layers must be specified and applied in a way that suits the chosen system and conditions. Edge trims and junction details are part of the construction, not decorative extras. Ask what the quotation includes beneath and around the waterproof surface as well as which covering is proposed.
The existing roof may not provide a suitable base for the work. A quotation that includes stripping and a new deck is different from one that assumes the current substrate can remain. That assumption should be supported by assessment. The cost of GRP roof renewal becomes unclear if two proposals use the same material name but describe different underlying construction.
Deck condition and preparation
Moisture, weak boards and movement can affect the suitability of a substrate. Covering a defective deck does not correct its condition. The assessment should explain what can be seen initially and whether the roof needs opening to establish the extent of affected material. Any proposed retention of existing boards should be discussed alongside the preparation required for a suitable surface.
Preparation includes more than clearing visible dirt. The deck arrangement, joints, edge support and compatibility with the roofing method all matter. Insulation or vapour control changes need coordinating if they form part of the work. Ask how newly discovered damp materials or structural defects will be discussed. A complete specification should not leave those issues hidden behind a general fibreglass allowance.
GRP roof assessment
- Standing water and roof drainage considered
- Underlying deck condition assessed
- Upstands and wall junctions checked

A straightforward rectangle needs different detailing from a roof with several corners, upstands and penetrations. Rooflights, wall junctions and changes of level introduce more connections within the waterproof construction. The area alone therefore cannot describe the amount of work. Ask how each perimeter and penetration will be formed and how the new roof meets adjoining materials.
Drainage falls and outlets should also be assessed. GRP roofing cost UK searches often focus on the covering, but a roof that retains water because of its shape needs that issue considered. A new surface is not automatically a solution to an uneven deck or poorly positioned outlet. The proposal should explain how rainwater will leave the roof once the work is complete.
Application conditions and working arrangements
Resin-based work has application requirements that depend on the chosen materials and site conditions. Weather, substrate moisture and the sequence of work need planning. Ask how the roof will be protected during preparation and how the proposed method accounts for those requirements. It is not appropriate to assume that any coating can be applied over any existing roof whenever convenient.
Access and protection below the roof matter too. A garage beside a shared passage and an extension above occupied rooms can have different working constraints. Existing roof coverings and waste need handling appropriately, particularly if there is uncertainty about their composition. Describe the building’s use and access when enquiring so the scope reflects the site rather than only the measured roof footprint.
Compare GRP with alternatives by full build-up
Rubber and other flat roof coverings use different installation and junction methods. A fair comparison starts with options suitable for the same roof, each including the supporting work it needs. Read the EPDM cost and general flat roof replacement guides for those separate questions. Avoid comparing one material-only estimate with another contractor’s full stripping, insulation, deck and drainage proposal.
For a GRP enquiry, ask for a written scope identifying substrate assumptions, waterproof layers, edge details, outlets, access and removal of existing materials. If the roof leaks, explain where and when water appears and mention previous repairs. A suitable recommendation should account for the construction and application conditions, not simply provide a GRP roof price detached from the roof’s actual state.
Need it sorted? Book GRP roof assessment
For a GRP roofing enquiry, describe the flat roof’s current covering, internal use and drainage arrangement. McCluskey Roofing can discuss an assessment and the next step towards a free quote. Ask how the substrate, perimeter and application requirements will be addressed, and compare suitable alternatives on their complete build-ups rather than an isolated resin or fibreglass material allowance.
